My Journey in Solar, Lead Generation, Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

When a client recently told me they were inspired by my passion and energy toward the technology transformation project I’m working on for their company, it got me thinking: what does it mean to have passion for something? At 51 years old, as a Chief Marketing Officer, I’ve discovered that passion is not just a word or a deep feeling—it’s a driving force, it’s part of your personality. That internal spark lights up my day, pushes me to overcome obstacles, and compels me to do my absolute best with solar lead generation and other deliverables, even when the odds are against me.

The True Meaning of Passion

Passion, for me, is about wholeheartedly caring for the outcome of a project, a client relationship, or a broader mission. It means I’m not just clocking in hours—I’m investing my soul into every campaign, every strategic move, and every conversation. Passion doesn’t just “get the job done”; it transforms the job into a meaningful experience that elevates everyone involved. When you have passion, you can feel it in your gut. It’s an unwavering commitment to excellence and continuous learning, no matter how much you already know.

Reflecting on My Solar Journey

My passion has been most apparent throughout my decade-long journey in residential solar. I had the incredible opportunity to be the first CMO of Momentum Solar in New Jersey. When I look back on the last ten years of successes and failures, I see a tapestry of lessons learned, relationships formed, and a growing sense of purpose that shaped who I am today.

During my time in the residential solar space, I spent countless hours with teams, clients, and partners from all walks of life. I learned from sales reps on the front lines, from installers in the field, from marketing experts behind the scenes, and, of course, from customers themselves. This hands-on exposure taught me the ins and outs of turning a highly technical product into simple, relatable terms—a critical skill in solar lead generation.

I brought over ten years of digital marketing and distribution expertise to the terrestrial solar business. I mastered the art of marketing and sales in a space that requires both technical understanding and emotional connection or emotional IQ. Breaking down a solar system into bite-sized concepts helped potential customers see the real-world benefits behind the jargon. Over time, I learned how to sharpen my competitive edge by studying every detail of my competitors’ products, services, and offerings. By understanding their gaps, and the changing of the guard, I refined my own value proposition to address what they missed.

Listening and Learning: The Keys to Success

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the power of listening. When I sit down with a customer, I want to understand their journey—where they come from, how they reached this moment, where they want to go, and what obstacles stand in their way. Only then can I offer a solution that truly helps them succeed. Sometimes, that means doing a “reverse sale” and exploring what happens if they don’t go solar or choose a different path. This approach builds trust and shows customers I genuinely care about their best interests.

I also discovered the value of the “takeaway” strategy—gracefully showing a prospect what they might miss if they opt out of a solar solution. Used ethically and kindly, it emphasizes the real cost of doing nothing.

Throughout the years, I’ve taken away a piece of insight or strategy from everyone I’ve met in the industry—whether they had years of experience or were just starting out. This field is brimming with opportunities to learn, and I’ve found that possessing the correct information and a transparent communication style goes a long way in establishing trust. Ultimately, it’s not just about selling systems or generating leads—it’s about the bigger picture: improving people’s lives, benefiting communities, and positively impacting our environment.

I’ve learned to appreciate the art and science of the solar sale, recognizing each transaction as a chance to improve. Mistakes have been my most outstanding teachers, and I proudly stand on a foundation built by both triumphs and setbacks.
